Johnny hit and run Pauline. Originally on 1980’s Los Angeles by X. A fucked up track about Sex Drugs, and ? And the Mysterians: it’s my least favorite track on the album (which isn’t saying much, it’s still great).
This version features Howe Gelb of Giant Sand in his trademark haunted desert moans (vox and guitar), assisted by Polly. It was the first track I heard off the album Cover Magazine. I figured Howe had finally cashed in after watching Calexico grow through the 90’s. There’s a whole story behind that, maybe wikipedia can explain it to you. It’s not really relevant. The point is, I though Gelb has sold out and made a radio friendly album. He hadn’t. Cover Magazine is intense and wonderful.
In conclusion. X is amazing, Giant Sand is great; and PJ Harvey is pretty good. (I’m not saying mean things about Calexico because I’m picturing Buzz making disparaging faces at his monitor somewhere in Brooklyn.)
